What is Ayres’ Sensory Integration®?
Dr A. Jean Ayres was an Occupational Therapist, who completed post-graduate education psychology. She was the first person to suggest difficulties registering, interpreting and responding to sensory information could interfere with activities of everyday life, calling her newly developing theory Sensory Integration. She also clearly described ‘sensory integration dysfunction and developed ways to assess and address these difficulties, calling it ‘Sensory Integration Therapy’.
Expertly trained and experienced clinicians
Therapists trained in Ayres Sensory Integration Practitioners including advanced practitioners. Our therapists are highly experienced in completing sensory assessments in schools, homes and hospitals. All of our therapists are supervised by an Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner.
Assessment process
Assessments are guided by Ayres Data Driven Decision Making Tool (DDSM). The DDSM includes use of a systematic process for clinical hypothesis generation and testing; use of assessment data to develop and tailor client-centered, replicable interventions. We use gold standard assessment tools (Ayres Clinical Observations, Movement ABC and appropriate Sensory profiles).
Concluding assessment
We discuss cases using a full multi disciplinary team with consideration of the differential diagnoses. Outcomes are shared with adult/child, parents and school where appropriate.
